UNT Admissions Essay (Grad Studies)
I was five years old when I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. Although I tried to run away from my calling throughout my childhood and adolescence, by the time I was a junior in high school, I was preparing to attain my kindergarten goals. As a student in the Ready, Set, Teach program, I was exposed to the realities of the teaching profession very early and there was still nothing that could deter me from continuing into the field. Being a teacher is not just a job or career, it is my livelihood. However, I know that I am destined and ready to do more.
This past May, I was the commencement speaker for the Simmons School of Education graduation ceremony at Southern Methodist University. During my speech, I told an anecdote about the teachers who have inspired me and the responsibility of future educators to do the same to their own students. I talked about how me being born to teenage parents only made me stronger. I also mentioned how me growing up in a low socio-economic class forced me to become successful so that I could reach back and help others.
